Contemporary Art
As a multimedia artist, I address themes of identity, place, the everyday, and memory. My inspiration is rooted in art history, popular culture, and feminism. Though the most important impact to my work is the mother-daughter relationship. Using anecdotes and first hand experiences produced from the relationship with my own mother, I use humor as a foil for shame, pain, trauma, and ultimately love.
In my art practice, I combine and transform unconventional and traditional media to create images. By introducing an olfactory device to the installations, it triggers the recollection of memory. Cinnamon and rosewater were common ingredients found within the recipes used by the my women in my family.
Genealogy and ancestry is a thread throughout the body of my work. My mother is an academically trained genealogist. I would often travel with her to graveyards, sifting through dusty government archives, and microfiche in a library to locate traces of our ancestral lineage. Navigating census records, and marriage certificates of homesteaders and immigrants (those even unrelated to me), I couldn't help but create a fictional narrative of their identity and life. These experiences fundamentally altered my perception of the world, and myself within it.
